The name of Major Roi Klein was engraved in the history of the State of Israel when, during the Second Lebanon War, with the words "Shema Yisrael" on his lips, he threw himself on a grenade in order to save the lives of soldiers under his command.
While according to rabbinic teaching "there are those who earn immortality in a single moment" isolated from the life that preceded it, Roi Klein's place in immortality was constructed over many years. From an early age, Roi worked to strengthen and refine his middot, the positive qualities of his character, and when he came of age, he devoted most of his spare time to Torah study.
There can be no doubt that he drew the courage and the self-sacrifice that he needed on the battlefield from his background in deliberate character development and from the Torah study hall.
With the help of Rav Eliezer Kashtiel, Roi's study partner in his last years, "With All Your Heart" sheds light on some of the qualities that were so characteristic of Roi.
The book offers an encounter with Roi's spiritual world and the milieu in which he lived, and although its subject matter is profound, it is written in a style that is easily accessible to the general reader who wishes to understand the making of an authentic, modern-day Israeli hero.

I found this book in my public library! The chapters on gevurah and on purity are more precious than gold. He explains the moshul of the King's daughter who marries the burglar in a way I have never heard before, that opens up a world of elevated action. I am so glad this book is again in print, and I can buy my own copy. This is a book that changes the reader-- you are not the same after having absorbed even a few chapters. It is a book to come back to, so you can learn and grow more.

  2. a true TZADIK!
Though I have not yet read the book, I have seen the video. It is important that people know that his final act of heroism was not an isolated act. It was the culmination of the way he lived his whole life, - for HaShem, for Am Yisrael, for Eretz Yisrael. I would strongly urge every Jew from 9 to 90 to see the video, to read the book, and to be inspired by them to be a better Jew.
