When I chose this book at random to read to second graders in my school library, I was rewarded by the enthusiastic response of children and adults alike. The youngsters were enthralled by the story of a flock of sheep who believed they could manage just fine without the care and protection of their shepherd (despite the protestations of one of their group)--until repeated encounters with a pack of wolves change their minds quickly enough. The illustrations are a delight, and are perfectly matched to the mood of the story. Young children identify with the need to feel independent, yet realize we need the protection of those who care for us and, of course, Hashem. Older kids and adults appreciate the humor and witticisms that abound in this gem of a story.
